Musings : Why Do You/I Write

Thank you, I finally got that push to put this down.

I came across the #WhyDoIWrite challenge on instagram and I wrote the short piece in the image above. After coming across it again on one of those award reply posts, I thought I’d give it a shot. Actually, the question was “what is the meaning of your blog name/address” – that kind of led me back to the piece above. While the night I created this blog is still very fresh in my memory, I do not know or remember what the blog domain name means. Maybe the poem above captures it perfectly.

So why do I write? I’m not exactly sure why; a plethora of reasons. I have come across several short poems that do some of them justice while at the same time not capturing the full picture.

I wrote this not too long ago:-

Maybe that is why I write

It allows me to be vulnerable enough

To express myself

Go through the motions

Without thinking of any judgement

Do writers always know where their work is going? Not always
The last time I thought about writing this piece, I thought it was going to centre on truth and whether or not it is relative.

I am reminded of a CS Lewis quote; A man makes a friend when he discovers that what he previously thought were his own idiosyncrasies are not entirely his — another shares them (paraphrased). Maybe we write in hopes that others have felt that way or share the same views.

People always say write about what you know (I have never really heard anyone say this in person)
Maybe more accurately; write what (you think/believe) you know

Do you write? (Un)published? Ever thought about why?

To make sense of things?
Just for the pay?
For the applause?
To enlighten?

An ever changing combination of the aforementioned?

A highly meaningful post, leaves one with a lot to ponder ’bout! As for me, I never set out to write or blog; writing found me as it was thrusted upon my shoulders by a few delightful folks I happened upon when I became active on social media! Chief amongst ’em is awesomely talented and pretty cool Dr. Temitope Ogundare of ‘The Z Channel’ Blogspot; an absolute Sweetheart! He bestowed my blog onto me, down to the domain name amongst other things! The only thing I can lay total claims to, are the posts! 😂😂😂

As against this backdrop therefore, I can’t exactly say why I write! What I do know however is that I love to see people laugh, as the happy camper that I am and situations where folks may not necessarily see humor, I do! I write out of personal experiences and I feel totally fulfilled; almost like one who’s gotten away with murder; once am able to make at least one soul, to just smile and cut loose! Am a really lazy writer but you can be sure that once inspiration hits, I blow myself away and go the whole nine yards! LOL

Why do I write? Such a tangible question. One I don’t have an answer to, yet. Maybe for escape, expression, or a certain high like weed but I know I can’t not write, it’s so hard not to. I just have to. Even if it’s no good. But why? Why?
Thank you for this beautiful post!

I write to capture the emotions and thoughts of the present to help Future Me gauge growth and shifting perspectives. I write to give voice to the dilemmas of others who probably don’t write too. I write for myself because I am selfish. I write for others because I like to intrude by saying the things they would rather be silent about. Even in my selfishness and intrusion, I believe words are powerful enough to save a life. Who knows? It may have all been selfless service.

I’m glad it made you ponder.

    Wow. That’s interesting.

Indeed! I do feel that way sometimes. Inspiration does feel like a fickle mistress sometimes.

    Thank you for reading.

Thank you for taking time out to read and comment.

Maybe for now just enjoy the pleasure of writing. Whether you know why or not.

    Hmmm. Selfish service?

Hehe. Has a nice ring to it.

“Maybe we write in hopes that others have felt that way or share the same views.”
This resonates with me. In addition, I write to provoke thought.
I think we need to visit the ‘why’ from time to time. Thanks for sharing Tony.

I love this! Totally. More especially, I am in awe of the depth of the picture post and the poem in this bit. That question “why do I write” for me is somewhat demanding … because I think sometimes we don’t really know why we write, we just write because we cannot not write.

In other news, I nominated you for the Sisterhood award (with as huge a doubt as the size of Mountain Everest regarding whether you’re female or not) and I hope you accept it from me with as much love as ‘ve conferred it to you…

Thank you! Those two are especially from the heart.

Indeed. Sometimes, we write to find out why we (think we) write.

Haha. Now I wish I read the post immediately I got the email. I am of the other gender – male. The title of the post already precludes me :).

It’s a huge honour to be nominated. The weird question definitely hits a spot.

Lol! Touché! I’ll just have to find a replacement to save myself the embarrassment. Thanks for the clarification! I feel more at ease now knowing this… hehe.
